Over 50s in Hounslow can get Fit as a Fiddle

Older people in London are being encouraged to get fit as a fiddle by taking part in activities run by Age Concerns across the region to promote active lifestyles amongst the over-50s.

Fit as a fiddleFit as a Fiddle is a major new programme funded by the Big Lottery Fund and launched by Age Concern that will help older people all over England to live more healthy, active and fulfilling lives.

Older people find it particularly hard to access suitable activities in their communities, and very few take sufficient exercise to meet the international guidelines of half an hour’s exercise of ‘moderate intensity’ on at least 5 days per week.

Fit as a Fiddle schemes in London include a programme in Hounslow being developed through a partnership between Age Concern Hounslow, Age Concern Feltham, Hounslow Crossroads and Hounslow Council and health service staff.

Over the next 4 years, the partner organizations will make contact with a wide range of community groups, recruiting and training volunteers with relevant skills and experience to deliver health and fitness sessions, including dance, gentle exercise, walking groups, organic gardening and healthy eating.

Debbie Anderson of Age Concern Hounslow said, “We will be delivering truly life-changing benefits to hundreds of people across Hounslow. By providing safe and enjoyable activities and facilities that promote healthy, active ageing in the community, we will help older people to make real the goal of a ‘fit body, fit mind.’ Better physical health and healthier eating goes hand-in-hand with improved mental well-being and will help older people to stay independent for longer.”

Thanks to a £15 million grant from the Big Lottery Fund, Age Concern has developed the Fit as a Fiddle programme with a coalition of national partners to meet the demands of demographic changes and increased life expectancy. The expectation of a good quality life in older age, particularly amongst the Baby Boomer generation, has highlighted the important role appropriate exercise and nutrition can play in maintaining fitness in later life.

Older volunteers (aged over 50) in Hounslow are needed for Fit as a Fiddle to become physical activity trainers and to provide support services for their peers. For more details contact Deborah Anderson on 020 8560 6969.
